Rampage Toys Dapper Bat Tank!!!

Rampage Toys
Dapper Bat Tank!

The header card says it all!

Dapper Bat is a miscreant with an olde timey hat, in a tank! The hat is actually articulated, for comic hilarity and crazy awesome action! This is one of the most bizarre combinations I have ever seen, thus increasing my love and admiration for the toy!

"Ello, Guvnah! Wot's all 'dis, 'den?"
This dude is seriously ready for a night out on the town! Dapper and destructive and dangerously adorable.

ThreeA Action Portable Cold Merde!

ThreeA
Adventure Kartel
Action Portable
Cold Merde

by Ashley Wood/ThreeA

Ol' Cold Merde here is the Father of Bleak Mission and the grandfather of mopey Tommy Mission. Yup, he's a grandpa! A pretty bad ass grandpa. He's literally covered in guns! The attention to detail in the Action Portable line is simply amazing. This grumpy dude's outfit is replete with tiny zippers, a fur collar, buttons and about a zillion holsters for his massive personal arsenal. The clothing is weathered and lived-in looking. The massive parka limits the articulation a bit, but it's well worth the overall aesthetic. Don't even try to take his coat off if you don't have about 4 extra hours and a pair of pliers to try to put it back on. Trust me, it's a bitch.

"Oooh. Guns, guns, guns."
-Clarence Boddicker

It's great that ThreeA occasionally offers a retail assortment of their wonderful figures so average dopes like me can get their hands on one from time to time. I've also noticed that recent waves have not stunk as bad and require no outgassing. I once had an Acolyte Zomb that totally reeked and had to sit out in the sun for a few days before I could play with it. ThreeA does a great job with both scales (1/6 & 1/12) and the joints are generally tight and the figures are pretty sturdy. The 12th scale figures kind of have standing issues due to the lack of ankle joints, but you can still pose them pretty well. The only real complaint I have is that as an adult with adult sized hands, the accessories are so damn tiny I'm constantly losing them and looking for them in the carpeting with a flashlight!

The Galaxy People Halloween Galaxy Bat!

Halloween Galaxy Bat!
by The Galaxy People!

This is the Halloween version of Galaxy Bat. It sold out pretty damn fast cause everybody be wantin' a Galaxy Bat. My pants are totally blown off by this figure! The colors are outrageous! He looks like he has bloody eyes and wants to bite you! His teeth are sharp and scary!

Galaxy Bat's head glows in the dark!!! And when I say that his head glows, it really GLOWS!

Galaxy Bat wears a violently pink spacesuit and is adorned with a yellow vinyl cape/wings. Galaxy Bat feels like an amalgam of tokusatsu, Henshin Cyborg, and five and dime monster figures. He is a crazy space dracula monster and I LOVE HIM!!!

Marmit 1964 GODZILLA!

1964 Godzilla!
by Marmit!

This wonderful chunk of kaiju is based on Godzilla's appearance circa 1964. He is a bulky, bumpy, lumpy, avacado-esque gorilla lizard. His base is black vinyl with metallic teal and silver sprays. He has piercing, thoughtful yellow eyes and a gaping, blood red maw with silver, razor sharp teeth.

Godzilla threatens a ginormous styrofoam egg in Godzilla Vs. Mothra.

Godzilla! King of the Monsters! A dehydrated, sweaty guy in a heavy rubber suit!

This is a hefty, solid toy! His spines are rough and his tail is thick and meaty! He's 10" tall!

The weird subplots in the Godzilla films I used to watch on TV20 Thriller Double Feature always freaked me out as a kid. This scene freaked me out especially. Godzilla movies are weird.

Supervinyl SPOTLIGHT: GRODY SHOGUN!!!

Grody Shogun!

Monsters! Ensorcelled Men! Yokai!

Grody Shogun consists of a strange collection of misshapen misfits, oddities and supernatural forces. Lovingly brought to our world from the sofubi netherworld by Luke Rook, every time I pick one of these guys up I am magically transported to the lazy Saturday afternoons of my childhood. The toys have a childlike innocence and homemade, rough hewn quality to them. They are blocky and sturdy and fun to paint!

The basic, unpainted Monster is my favorite. Lumpy and with mismatched limbs, this figure is very endearing to me. There were literally thousands of variations of the Monster, with several different interchangeable body, head and arm sculpts and colors. Monster is more than a toy, he's a way of life!

Ensorcelled Man is evocative of the pinheads from Todd Browning's Freaks. With a furry potbelly and ape-like mitts, En Man would be well at home in a circus sideshow or mad scientist's laboratory. The figure itself has crazy articulation in the arms and he can be posed in many interesting positions. He also has these weird fat pads on the tops of his feet. Personally I like this bizarre touch, when I play with him I pretend that's how he survives in the winter time while hibernating, by living off of the fat in his fat pads, quite like a camel does. That is what is so great about Grody Shogun; you can project whatever crazy back story you want into these characters, thus making it an even more enjoyable play experience! And by the way, if you don't play with your toys you should NOT be reading Super Vinyl Toy Review!

Strawberry Shortcake Monster! I paint my Grody guys with acrylics and cover them with Mod Podge. I use an old toothbrush for spatter effects. I have never used anything like Monster Kolor because, quite frankly, I am not very ambitious and quite cheap.

Oji San is a lazy yokai (a supernatural monster of Japanese folklore, as if you didn't know) who builds clockwork robots to collect spider webs for him for his own greedy consumption. This little guy has a helluva lot of charm! His bumpy head reminds me of The Elephant Man. His body kind of reminds me of a pineapple!

Poor Karakuri! All work and no play, collecting spider webs all day! The hard lines of this figure contrast the soft bumps on Oji San, which is cool because he's basically a robot version of his master!

Had there been toys like this when I was a child I would have gone bonkers ass bananas to get my hands on all of them. Each Grody Shogun piece has it's own unique personality, and is the farthest thing away from mass produced, mainstream action figures. When you look at all of the flaws and quality control issues in domestic figures (Mattel, Hasbro), how could you not swing this way, collecting toys made by people who love to make toys?! Sure, these guys are generally a little pricier than your average Star Wars figure, but you can see and feel the difference. I know it's kind of like comparing apples to oranges, but even in the vinyl collecting community I feel that Grody Shogun can't be beat. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good stuff out there (Secret Base, Gargamel, Le Merde, etc.), but there's nothing as distinctive or as innocently charming as GRODY SHOGUN!!!

Butcher Brand MEGARA!

Megara by Butcher Brand

This little turtle guy packs a powerful, mystic punch! He is cast in crazy toxic colors and all the nooks and crannies on this figure make him stand out. His battle-ready stance is amazing, as is his back story:
“Megara is the creation of Lord Mordus, an amazingly powerful space wizard. Megara has been a relentless soldier for Mordus, destroying countless civilizations and worlds. Mordus crosses the line and accuses Megara of disobeying him, unleashing his cosmic powers against the Turtle beast. In their climactic battle, Lord Mordus tears the shell from Megara’s body, sending the creature into a berzerker rage. Megara tears Lord Mordus’ face armor off of his master and sends him fleeing for his life. Now Megara has donned Lord Mordus’ Face Mask as his new shell and trophy. Imbuing him with fantastical powers and abilities, Megara travels through space, hunting Lord Mordus so that he can kill his former Master.”

He features one point of articulation, at the shell/mask.

This is one serious little badass! Look at the angry scowl and epic determination! An evil herald of the ages! He #@$!! ROCKS!
